Arsenal vs Blackburn Rovers 11th February 2008 – Premier League – Emirates Stadium It was difficult not to take the piss out of some Man Ure and Chelsea fans too much today in case we slip up tonight. Form says we will win, the media think we will win, the bookies think we will win but me, I'm not so sure. Blackburn are the new Bolton and their tactics tonight will be to stop Arsenal from playing rather than concentrating on their own game. This will consist of fouls, time wasting, diving and cheating. There will be no attractive or entertaining football, just a frustrating evening lies ahead. It's anti-football and I hate it. I'd like to add that I hate Mark Hughes too! Last season we won this fixture 6-2 which doesn't do the match, or Blackburn any justice. There was a frustrating FA cup match here too which ended 0-0 at Home with Blackburn eventually winning in the replay with a last minute goal from Benni McCarthy. We were away to Blackburn for our second match of this season and the 1-1 score line and performance suggested it would be another difficult season for arsenal, particularly away from home (as was so problematic last season). The team have proven many people wrong, including myself I must say, and a win tonight will give us a 5 point lead in the championship and a realistic opportunity to win the title for the 14th time in our history. David Bentley is a player that I do like and it's a shame that he wasn't patient enough to at stay at arsenal. He will get a bit of abuse tonight but I was pleased to see him play for England during the week. It should be noted that there were three players in the England team on Wednesday that came through the ranks at Arsenal: Bentley, Upson and Cashley Cock. The line up tonight is: Jens Lehmann William Gallas Philippe Senderos Gael Clichy Bacary Sagna Cesc Fabregas Mathieu Flamini Gilberto Alexander Hleb Emmanuel Adebayor Eduardo It’s a strong side and should be good enough to beat Blackburn, as long as we are able to play football. We get off to a great start as we take the lead after only 4 minutes, with our third attempt in as many minutes. The goal is scored from an unlikely source though, “Big” Phill Senderos. It comes from a corner as well which is a threat that we dint have for the past few seasons. This time the corner kick was taken by Eduardo who puts in a sweet ball into the box and it’s nodded home by the big Swiss defender. We don’t sit back and continue pressing for a second goal. There are shots from Eduardo, Adebayor and Flamini but it it’s the visitor that come closest when Bentley’s free kick is headed just wide of goal by Stephen Reid. The match then seems to slow down but as the tempo slows so does the entertainment. There’s not else much of note up to Half Time other than a couple of corners, but the deliveries are poor and nothing comes from them. Half-Time I was glad to see half time as the match wasn’t going anywhere. Hopefully it will be better now. I feel that we are always vulnerable in the first 10 mins after the restart too as the away teams always come out stronger. We don’t have the cushion of the second goal so it could be disastrous if we concede. We nearly do though in the first few seconds as Bentleys cross\shot is on target but thankfully knocked wide by the recalled Jens Lehman. Almost immediately we nearly score at the other end but the low and powerful shot by Hleb hits the post. A bright start by both sides. Adebayor gets more into the game as we revert to the long balls over to him, using his power to hold up the ball and we look the most likely to score. As the game opens up though, Blackburn have some chances too and the stadium fills with nervous tension every time the ball is in our half. As we approach the final whistle this tension gets worse but we do start to dominate the possession again, as we did at the start of the match, and there are shots for Adebayor and a couple for Cesc. The second goal does come and with it a big sigh of relief all around the ground. It’s the 92nd minute and it’s scored by Adebayor. The real damage was done by Help’s silky run into the box and his lay off to Adebayor who just had to fire in from 6 yards. A brilliant result, a nervy performance but we are now sitting 5 points clear at the top of the Premier League and I’m starting to thing that we can actually with this thing. |
