Arsenal vs Derby
22nd September 2007 - Premier League - Emirates Stadium

I wake up rough again this morning. Not from too much drink this time but a fecking virus or something. It's not going to stop me going to the match though. If I can still walk then I can still go.

My journey is a bit different today as I pick up my brother first. He is going to see AFC Wimbledon, not Arsenal, but we can travel a few stops on the train together and go for a few games of pool first in a local pub. The pool ends in a 3-2 defeat but I’m confident of a more positive outcome for arsenal later on.

Derby deserved promotion to the premier league this season. They won via the play offs but they finished 3rd in the championship and were the 3rd best team. It’s not going to be easy for them to stay up though. They have already been beaten 4-0 & 6-0 but will take a lot on comfort from their midweek 1-0 win over Newcastle. Nonetheless, I still expect arsenal to win by 2 or 3 goals.

Hopefully Eduardo will start today and score again. It will be good to have an "in the box" type of player, the fox in the box that Arsene has been trying to find for so long. Time will tell how prolific he is but his goals so far and exceptional record for Croatia indicate that he will be a good goal scorer.

On the tube, about a dozen Derby fans get on to the already packed carriage singing Derby songs. They're all worse for wear but in good spirits. They know that it's unlikely that they will get anything out of the game but they are going to enjoy their day out regardless.

As I make my way to my seat a couple of mins early I see, and hear the Derby fans in the opposite end of the ground. Not an empty seat and in good voice. It's what football is all about.

The match gets underway and it doesn't take long to see the difference in class between the two teams and this is reflected in goals after only 10 minutes when Diaby makes a powerful run from the left, towards the box. He takes it around a Derby defender and unleashes an unstoppable drive into to top right corner. 1 nil to the Arsenal echoes around the full Emirates stadium (60,112).

We control the match from this point on. Derby work hard and cannot be faulted for effort, but there's only going to be one winner. The second goal comes from a long ball to Adebayor. He controls it well taking it around the keeper and slots it into an empty net for 2-0 at half time.

No dramas at half time today as I stay in my seat chatting to people around me. Actually it's much better then getting annoyed queuing for over priced crap beer, so that could be the end for the half time pint for me. Well in theory anyway!

The second half starts similar to the first. Derby are just as committed but Arsenal continue to dominate. The game as a spectacle is pretty much over when Eduardo is brought down for a blatant penalty which Adebayor converts sweetly into the bottom right corner.

Arsenal sit back and soak up Derby’s pressure easily and are able to break occasionally on the counter. On one such occasion the ball is passed around the Derby box in the usual arsenal fashion with no one taking a shot. The ball finds its way to Cesc who just whacks the ball into the net. A thunderbolt that nothing was stopping, including Stephen Bywater the Derby goalie.

The rout is completed on around 80 min's when Adebayor completes his hat-trick for a comfortable 5-0 victory.

Overall arsenal dominated the game from start to finish without breaking out of 3rd gear. We were able to soak up all the Derby pressure and if we needed to could have scored ten. It was a fun day out. We got the points, a goalfest and a sunny day.

We need to enjoy these days when they happen because we will have much harder tests in the future.
