Remember me? Arsenal Vs Villareal. Champions League Semi-final 1st Leg

Arsenal vs Inter Milan
29th Jul 2007 - Emirates Cup – Emirates Stadium

This is Arsenal's second match of the Emirates Cup Tournament where earlier PSG beat Valencia by three goals to nil. This means that Arsenal need to sore two goals or win the match to win the tournament.

First Half

It was a fairly strong Arsenal team. Inter are wearing their usual Blue and black stripes kit instead of the dreadful St George Cross shirts they wore yesterday. Arsenal are wearing the famous red & white.

The starting line-up was:

Jens Lehmann
Emmanuel Eboue
Kolo Toure
Justin Hoyte (Armand Traore 69)
William Gallas
Bacary Sagna
Kieran Gibbs (Nicklas Bendtner 79)
Francesc Fabregas (Denilson 83)
Mathieu Flamini
Alexander Hleb
Robin Van Persie

The Captain today was William Gallas.

Inter start of the match brightly and have all of the possession during the first 3-4 mins. There are a couple of fouls already- this is not a friendly match!

We are passing very well and the movement is good but there have been no chances at either end until about ten mins in we get a free kick about 5 yards outside the box but Kolo takes it and cracks it well wide.

Materazzi is the Inter captain and is met with a chorus of boos every time he touches the ball and on his first mistake 55+ thousand Arsenal fans are asking who he is (Who are ya!).

Seventeen year old Kiran Gibbs is playing very well for us today and looks like another great find by Arsene Wenger.

The first shot of the game comes from RVP on 19 minutes but the shot is saved by the keeper. Arsenal have started playing some lovely football and are beginning to dominate the game.

Eboue is playing right midfield today in front of new right back Bacary Sagna and is having a very good game. He makes a good run towards the corner flag but is taken down by Materazzi for the first booking of the match. The resulting free kick is from a very tight angle by Van Persie is able to get a powerful shot in at the near post but it’s an easy one for the goalie to save.

Straight away Eboue is taken down again, this time by Solari, and another yellow card is issued. This time the free kick is crossed into the box but is headed away to safety.

Close to the half hour mark an off side is given in Arsenal's favour but Lehman can't help himself and runs over to the inter player to give him a "friendly" push. Luckily not seen by the ref but he needs to stop doing this stuff.

On 36 mins Sagna has his first shot in an Arsenal shirt from out side of the area. It’s low, very powerful and on target but is saved by the keeper. Sagna and Eboue are playing very well together on the right and I can see this becoming a regular thing.

Gallas goes down injured after 39 mins and it doesn't look good at first but he recovers after a bit of treatment and is soon back on the pitch.

Eboue is terrorising the Inter defence and fouled once again outside of the area. RVP lines up the free kick, beats the wall but the ball flies just over the top left hand side of the goal.

We are really dominating know and the stats reflect this:

 Attempts on goal: 8 - 1
On-Target: 4 - 0

The most important stat though is still 0-0 as the whistle blows.

Half Time

The second half starts similar to the way the first ended with Arsenal dominating the game. The passing and attacking play is excellent and moving much quicker then yesterday. Sagna has played the overlap with Eboue a few times and it's working well.

On 51 mins Materazzi is subbed for Inter and his departure is greeted with even more boos from the Gooners!

Only a few seconds later a great chip from Cesc puts Robin though and he is brought down in the box. There was contact but no penalty is given.

On 61 mins the deadlock is broken when, against the run of play, and with their first shot on target, Milan score a soft goal. The ball is whipped into the box and is met by Suazo for a surprisingly easy header. Galls was marking the player but got beat in the air so like most of last season at home we dominate the game and end up 1 nil down.

The goal scorer is immediately substituted and on come Luis Figo.

Then comes Arsenal's best chance of the game when Eboue blasts wide from 10 yards out. Is it going to be one of those days?

Perhaps not! In the 68th Minute a Sagna cross lands at Helb's feet he but can only blast is at the keeper who makes a great save but is unable to hold onto the ball. It goes back to Helb who doesn’t make the same mistake. 1-1.

Again we are dominating the possession with all of the play in the Inter half. There are shots from Toure, Helb and RVP before the excellent Kieran Gibbs is substituted for yesterdays match winner Bendtner.

Lots of slick passing around the box brings back the memories of last season - dominating but unable to score. Traore is playing well since coming on for Hoyte and makes some good runs.

Cesc is replaced by Denilson before, on 84 mins, Robin gets the ball in the box lines up a shot and then quickly swivels the ball, fooling the Milan defence, and releases an unstoppable shot with his a right foot. A wonderful goal worthy of winning the match and it does.

Arsenal win the match 2-1 and also are the first winners of the Emirate Tournament. A trophy is presented to the Captain (Gallas) and a lap of honour is taken by the players - hopefully more of this will come in May 2008.
