Arsenal vs Liverpool 5th April 2008 – Premier League – Emirates Stadium Another match we must win if we are to stand any chance of winning the Premier League. The Scousers are out of the title race so can afford to rest players before our 2 Leg match next week. It’s an early kick-off today (12.45) but I set off in plenty of time, or so I think! I get on the train as usual but about halfway to London Waterloo station the train makes an unscheduled stop at Whitton. The driver announces that there’s a problem in London and that he has been instructed to wait. He also recommends that people travelling to London change at Richmond (2 stops away) to get the Underground line instead. After 10 minuets there is still no movement and the driver opens the doors before advising that we should get off here and try to get a bus to Richmond instead. At the bus stop there are about 100 people queuing but when the bus finally comes there’s no way I’m not getting on it. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Richmond station and as I arrive the Stratford train (which stops at Highbury and Isslington) is just leaving. Bugger. I don’t have to wait long for the next one and when I sit down there are some other Arsenal fans near by. We have a bit of chat and the conversation keeps going all the way to the match. By the time I arrive I have missed 30 minutes of the match but was quickly informed that I hadn’t actually missed very much. Liverpool made 9 changes from the team we played last week and we made a few too. The starting Line up is: Manuel Almunia Kolo Toure Justin Hoyte (Emmanuel Adebayor 57) Armand Traore (Gael Clichy 73) William Gallas Emmanuel Eboue Gilberto Cesc Fabregas Mathieu Flamini (Alexander Hleb 81) Theo Walcott Nicklas Bendtner A quick summary of the match is: First Half Littered with very poor play with no signs of urgency from either side. We fall behind just before half time when that freak Crouch scores against us again. To be fair, it was pretty decent goal from 30 yards out. Liverpool deserved to be in front. Second Half We play much better in this half and look the more dominant and likely to score. We get the equaliser just 10 minutes after the restart when Bendtner heads in from 6 yards Cesc’s free kick. We are finally starting to create chances and we press for the winner. There were chances for Walcott, Hleb, Gallas and Flamini but the winner doesn’t come and it’s unlikely now that the title will either. |
