Arsenal vs Middlesboro 15th March 2008 – Premier League – Emirates Stadium We are no longer in control in the Premier League. We should be 10 points clear but a number of poor results so far this season means that we are actually trailing the new leaders, Man Ure. It’s crucial that we get back to winning ways today, against the only team that have beaten us in the Premier League so far this season. The line up today is: Manuel Almunia Kolo Toure Bacary Sagna (Nicklas Bendtner 61) William Gallas Gael Clichy (Philippe Senderos 89) Emmanuel Eboue Cesc Fabregas Mathieu Flamini Alexander Hleb Emmanuel Adebayor Robin Van Persie (Theo Walcott 61) We started at electric pace and had the ball in the back of the net after only 4 minutes but the “goal” was ruled off-side and was disallowed. The replay clearly showed that the touch to Adebayor was actually from a Middlesboro so can’t have been off-side and should have been given. Middlesboro continued to defend well as we continued to attack well. A shot\cross from Eboue beat the keeper but was saved by the woodwork and Adebayor had a free header on goal. The goal was coming. It did come, and as per usual it was for the Away side against the run of play. The ‘Boro keeper kicked the ball out to the half way line and as the Arsenal defence was AWOL the ball was chased by the Middlesboro forwards Sanli and Aliadiere. Sanli won the race and then made an excellent cross to the ex-Arsenal man who finished very well to give ‘Boro the lead. We never do anything the easy way. As we continue to press there are chances for Hleb and Sagna and a potential penalty claim from Eboue but like has happened do often this season we go into the tunnel trailing. Half-Time RVP has a good effort in the opening few minutes and this is followed a few moments later with a Gallas header, from Cesc’s free kick, which goes over the bar. Middlesboro can’t get out of their half as we keep pushing forward but we are unable to break them down in what is turning into another frustrating game for us. Wenger makes an unusually bold substitution on the hour mark when he replaces Sagna with Bendtner which effectively puts us in a 3-4-3 formation. Our best chance of the game so far came in the 73rd minute when Hleb is one on one with the keeper but has his shot blocked – should have done better. We got the equaliser with four minutes remaining when Toure headed home from a Cesc Fabregas corner. Great, now go for the winner. We kept the pressure going and with 4 minutes added time (although there should have been 6) we had a chance. We kept trying but it didn’t come. No time was added for injury time stoppages and the game ended 1-1. Our fourth draw in a row, eight points dropped and our league challenge looking over. |
