Arsenal vs Newcastle 26th January 2008 - FA Cup 4th Rd - Emirates Stadium Our midweek disapointment has affected my feelings for todays game. I love the FA Cup and I always look forward to the games but now the FA cup is our only chance of getting to Wembley this season and I’d rather get todays tricky match against Keegan's Geordies out of the way. If we lose today then being out of both cups would be a disaster, if we win it's business as usual and will give us the mental edge when we play them again on Tuesday in the league. We are still challenging for the title and in the champions league but I honestly think that the FA cup is our best chance of winning a trophy this season and I’m desperate to go to the new Wembley. It's our full strength side today which is an indication of Arsene Wenger's intent in this competition, which is to win it. The team is: Jens Lehmann Philippe Senderos Gael Clichy Justin Hoyte William Gallas Abou Diaby (Gilberto 76) Cesc Fabregas Mathieu Flamini Theo Walcott (Alexander Hleb 76) Tomas Rosicky (Eduardo 9) Emmanuel Adebayor The match starts at a good tempo and the play is relatively even. Actually it stays like this for the whole of the first half. There are a few chances at each end but neither team looks like scoring. I found it quite entertaining though but the only disappointment was that Rosicky went off injured early on. Half time. The temperature seemed to drop during the break and I was feeling the cold. Hopefully there's something to cheer for soon. The breakthrough finally comes on about the hour mark. Adebayor.... Now we can chance our game by sitting back a little and attacking on the counter. The problem with this is that by allowing the opposition to come on to you there’s always a chance they will get the equaliser the longer it goes without scoring the second goal. This is what happened today and it was fairly tense every time Newcastle attacked but we played the better football in the second half and deserved the second goal when it finally came. It was after some good play in and around the box, notably by Eduardo, whose shot hit the post but ricochet to Adebayor who controlled it well taking a couple of touches before blasting the ball through shay givens legs into the net. With only 7 mins remaining we can now relax. I need to nip off a few minutes early today but as the clock counts down to 5 mins there's a sense that we are going to score again. 3 mins left I need to go and then it comes. Not quite how I was expecting but they all count. It was a Nicky butt og. Class! I head off and as I’m walking to arsenal tube I hear the crowd cheer as the fulltime whistle blows. I am glad to get that out of the way. We are in the hat for the 5th round, job done. All we need now is a good draw, ideally at home. Now it's back to the league. Our next game is on Tuesday at home against Newcastle! Same again please. |
