Arsenal vs Portsmouth
2nd September 2007 - Premier League - Emirates Stadium

I’m not going on the fucking bus again so I drive to a different station today and get a direct train to Waterloo rather then use the Rail Replacement Service.

The rest of the journey was ok, just the usual gripes about delays and overcrowded tubes but it didn’t bother me too much.

I watched Pompey home and away last season. At the emirates we came from 2 nil behind to get a 2-2 draw and at Fratton Park it was a drab match on the last day of the season that finished goalless (although there was a disallowed Portsmouth goal and Baptista (Crap-tista) missed a penalty).

I'm hoping for more today. In the matches so far this season we have shown that we're more resilient than last year, not giving away stupid goals. Our shots to goals ratio is much better too as we are less wasteful in front of goal. I have not seen Pompey play yet this season but looking at their results they are letting in more goals and with calamity James in goal there's always a chance of a gift.

It was another bright start from Arsenal and we dominate the opening stages before winning a penalty after 10 minutes when RVP is crudely brought down by England’s number one, David James.

Adebayor stepped up to take it and gently passed it into the bottom right corner (BTW James dived the wrong way) and the familiar sound of “one nil to The Arsenal” was ringing around the stadium. Portsmouth had a few shots from distance after some poor, or lack of, defending by the boys but it was a pretty comfortable and deserved 2-0 score line at HT after Cesc slotted home the second from about 4 feet away after a bit of a melee in the Pompey box.

The second half started with a bang. After only a few minutes of the restart, Senderos clumsy challenge on ex-Gooner Kanu earned him a straight red as he was the last defender. We were lucky not to have been punished further when the subsequent free kick from just outside the box didn’t amount to anything.

So, we had 40 mins to play with only 10 men but luckily we had a two goal cushion. As you would expect, Pompey had more of the ball in the second half and had some more chances on goal. Almunia had a very good game and made some excellent saves. The change in Pompey’s play seemed to help Arsenal though as we were able to play on the counter and it wasn’t long before we extended the lead further. Arsenal were given a free kick half way between the corner flag and the 18 yard line and while Pompey were still arguing with the referee, Fabregas took a quick one and passed to Rosicky on the edge of the box whose powerful kick went straight into the far corner. A superb goal straight from the training ground.

It should have been match over then but within only a few minutes a Portsmouth Cross deflects of Kanu’s arse for a bizarre goal. The last 20 minutes was very entertaining as the play moved from end to end with both teams having chances for more goals.

Overall it was a very good game, in fact the best match I have seen for some time. It had everything you could ask for. A sending off, a penalty and some top quality football - and all from arsenal! Portsmouth are either very poor or made to look very poor by a ten men Arsenal side that are starting to click. There’s a bit of improvement to be made defensively but going forward are looking very strong. It’s a bit premature to talk about Premiership titles with only one away game played but we are playing much better this season and if we can keep the momentum going then I don’t think we will be twenty plus points away from the top again.

Bring on the Yids!
