Arsenal vs Sevilla
19th September 2007 - UEFA Champions League Match 1 - Emirates Stadium

I’m not really in the mood tonight as I’m a bit run down but tonight’s match is against our toughest opponents in our group; Sevilla, the winner of the last two UEFA cups.

I remembered my scarf tonight too in case there a repeat of the scarf waving from our last European match against CSKA in which I forgot that it was planned. It’s not much effort and could make a difference to the atmosphere. I hope the match and atmosphere are a good as that match. A European night to remember.

I won’t be singing about Moscow tonight but I just hope that we can keep our good run going. We are doing far better than I thought we would at this stage but there's a long way to go yet and I'm worried about how a defeat could have affect confidence.

We have pretty much a full strength squad with the only absences being Gallas, Eboue and Lehman. I would expect Eduardo to start after being rested against the scum and Theo should play a role too, but perhaps coming of the bench.

I get to the ground with about 3 mins before kick off. They have run out of programmes so I get a bottle of water instead and head to my seat.

The match starts at a good temp and I realise that neither Eduardo nor Theo are playing, what do I know! I am surprised though that Flamini is playing in central midfield instead of Gilberto or Denilson who are both on the bench.

There are chances at both ends during the first half. The first goal of the game was at the opposite end of the ground to me and I didn't get a very good view of it. The way it was celebrated made it look like Cesc scored it but I just checked the web and it has been given as an own goal. The important thing though is that it went in and after 30 mins we were a goal to the good.

It remained very even, very open and very enjoyable for the rest of the play up to half time.

The half time whistle blows and I head out to get a programme. As expected there’s a queue so I join it and wait my turn. I look at the queue for food & drink and it’s about 2 thirds less than other matches (there’s no beer in UEFA matches). I’m able to get a coffee too and I still make it back to my seat before the start of the second half. It goes to show that they should have separate bars and food counters because the majority of people only want a pint at half time. It worked well in the Northbank at Highbury and I never heard any complaints there.

Arsenal run the Sevilla defence ragged for the first 10 mins of the second half and a deserved 2nd goal comes after a fortunate free kick is given close to the corner flag. It is whipped in by Cesc and converted by RVP. An excellent result so far but arsenal sit back now and let Sevilla attack for a nervous last 20 mins when only the keeper, good defending and an awful amount of luck prevented them scoring.

We had an almost capacity crowd of over 59,000 which is more than double chel$ki's attendance yesterday. They had a discount on all the tickets too so it’s an absolute disgrace.

What was a lot more noticeable today was the amount of fans leaving early. There was a steady flow from about 10 mins left but within a few minutes people were streaming out. Justice prevailed though as Eduardo taps home the third and final goal of the match for a flattering 3-0 result. I’m sure the Sevilla fans are gutted but we're off to a flying start and beating a very good Sevilla team 3 nil will send the message around Europe that arsenal are ready to beat the best by playing entertaining, quality football.
