Arsenal vs West Ham
1st January 2008 - Premier League - Emirates Staduim

West Ham's best player (left in the summer)

They have been a bit of a bogey side for us of recent seasons. They are the last team to beat us at Highbury and the only team to beat us at the emirates to date. They also did the double over us last season too. Today will be different though. We have pretty much the same players as last season but we are a completely different team.

I don’t usually bet on arsenal but I’m so confident we will win today I have had a bet on arsenal winning both halves (e.g. winning at half time and winning the match). Probably my first mistake of the day!

Our line up is strong and form book would indicate an arsenal victory.

Manuel Almunia
Emmanuel Eboue (Alexander Hleb 77)
Kolo Toure
Justin Hoyte
Gael Clichy
William Gallas
Cesc Fabregas
Mathieu Flamini
Tomas Rosicky
Emmanuel Adebayor
Eduardo (Theo Walcott 64)

My bet is looking good when we take the lead after 90 seconds. Another excellent finish by Eduardo. The ball is crossed in towards Eduardo who chests it down before volleying into the net. One nil to the arsenal. Lovely jubbly.

West ham don’t recover very well from this and it’s all too easy for arsenal.

The subject of the West Ham song

We score again soon after to make it 2-0 after only 18 minutes. This time it's Adebayor. He makes a good run with the ball after controlling a long ball He takes it around the goalie, Robert green, but seems to have over run as he approaches the touchline. He shoots anyway from the tightest of angles but the ball is somehow deflected into the net by the far post.

I sit back into my seat and start thinking about 5 nil, probably my 2nd mistake of the day.

West Ham are very poor and arsenal sit back breaking on the counter.

Half-time

The second half starts and West Ham look a bit more lively. Clichy clears the ball off the line from a west ham corner but to be honest they still don’t look like scoring.

In a way it would be good for the excitement of the game if west ham scored as it needed an injection of something. They bring on Dean Ashton, a striker who I rate, but he looks out of shape and overweight. Maybe he had too much Christmas pudding but he certainly didn’t add anything to the hammers impotent attacking line.

Striker Dean Ashton in action

Football wise it was a poor game. West ham didn’t offer very much and it was over after Eduardo’s goal in the second minute. It's a results business, we got the result and I finally won a bet.
