Arsenal vs Wigan 24th November 2007 – Premier League – Emirates Stadium Wigan Athletic FC ![]() The day starts well. I meet my brother for a few games of pool and a couple of pints before the match. I am losing the pool 2-1 when my brother has to leave midway through the 4th frame. By default I win this frame and it ends up a 2-2 draw. I don’t think that today’s match will have such a score line though. Wigan are an OK side but I feel a bit sorry for them. They have a good Chairman in Dave Whelan and a nice shiny new stadium but there problem is that they’re in Wigan! This sounds like I’m just slagging off their little town but is actually causing them problems. Wigan is a rugby league town. The rugby team play in the same stadium and sell out every game but the football team regularly play in a half empty stadium. Another problem that they have is that they can’t attract the players. Who wants to go to Wigan when you can go to similar size clubs like Fulham in London for example. Wigan Train Station ![]() One thing that will help Wigan today though is that they have a new manager. Steve Bruce will be in the stands, as he officially takes over on Monday (well why we he want to start with a defeat!). I’m not saying the Steve Bruce is a great manager nut is a fact that teams with a new manager always play well in their first game in front of them. They are able to find an extra 20% from somewhere as they try to keep their place in the team for the next match. Perhaps if they always played like that they would need a new manager? The team for today is: Manuel Almunia Emmanuel Eboue (Eduardo 69) Kolo Toure Gael Clichy William Gallas Bacary Sagna Lassana Diarra Denilson Theo Walcott (Nicklas Bendtner 80) Tomas Rosicky Emmanuel Adebayor Cesc Fabregas is missing today because of a stupid booking in the Reading match. Last season when Cesc didn’t play we didn’t look like scoring. A Marcus Bent off-side goal and a superb Mike Pollitt save were the highlights of an otherwise average first half at the Emirates. Arsenal dominated possession but were frustrated by some dogged Wigan defending. Wigan defended well and played a counter attacking game and to be fair to them they also had a couple of good chances in the first half. The second half was pretty much the same as the first. Arsenal controlling possession but unable to break down a solid Wigan defence. The game sprung into to life around the 75 minute mark after a bad tackle by Bent on Denilson, retaliation to a confrontation the two players had only a minute earlier. It ended in a bit of a melee on the half way line and ended up with yellow cards for Gallas and Bent. He should really have been sent of though as there was intent to harm with that tackle. Changes were made with Eduardo replacing Eboue as we pushed for the win. Another bad tackle came with about tem minutes left on the clock when Theo was taken out by Heskey. Again is was a red card tackle but only the yellow was shown. It was the end for Theo and he was taken off on a stretcher. It looked bad and he is instantly replaced by Bendtner. It was the Dane that started the attack that led to the breakthrough. His excellent pass went wide to Sagna who put in a sublime cross which Gallas headed in at the near post. 1 nil to the Arsenal, seven minutes left, 3 points in the bag. It gets even better a couple of minutes later too. Bendtner is involved again when his fast run from inside the Arsenal half ends up with a sublime pass to Rosicky giving him a one on one with Pollitt. He makes no mistake and slots it in the net. 2 nil, job done. The result is a little harsh on Wigan as they have played quite well but there’s no time for sympathy when there’s 3 points at stake. We got the win we needed and to top it off Man Ure got beat by Bolton today too. Result. I stayed behind after the match because Martin Keown was doing a Q&A session. It was jam packed and quite uncomfortable. The sound system was terrible and I didn’t hear a word. He’s a legend though so it was worth all of the discomfort! ![]() |
