Blackburn Rovers vs Arsenal
18th December 2007 – Carling Cup QF – Ewood Park

Blackburn Rovers League Winners

Blackburn are the new Bolton. A mediocre team whose tactics against Arsenal in resent years is to kick us and time waste from the start. That’s what I’m expecting today too.

I’m watching tonights match in a hotel bar in Cheadle (near Manchester). The hotel, and bar, is full of people enjoying their Christmas Parties and I’m the only Arsenal fan!

As expected we play a young side but they are now an experienced side and I’m fairly confident that we can get the win.

Lukasz Fabianski
Philippe Senderos
Justin Hoyte
Armand Traore
Alexandre Song
Denilson
Mark Randall (Nacer Barazite 80) (Fran Merida 101)
Abou Diaby
Lassana Diarra
Eduardo (Kieran Gibbs 116)
Nicklas Bendtner

It was a dream start too. Arsenal started very brightly against Blackburn’s strongest side and we took the lead after only 6 minutes. 18 year old Mark Randell, making his first start, made a very good pass to Bendtner on the right hand side of the box and the Danes precise cross picks up Diaby’s run into the box. He doesn’t strike it well but the most important thing is that it loops over Friedel into the net. One nil to the Arsenal!

We turn it on.

It’s one-way traffic and it’s embarrassing for Blackburn Rovers. We completely dominate midfield, and the match. Bendtner hits the bar and Friedel had to make a couple of saves.

Ironically, it’s during Blackburn’s best spell that Arsenal get their second goal. Denilson wins the ball in the Arsenal half and runs towards goal. His pin point cross to Eduardo should have been picked up by Samba but it wasn’t and Eduardo makes no mistake. It was a deserved goal and looked like it would be a deserved 2 nil half time lead.

Blackburn didn’t read the script and instead the second goal sparked them into life. They got back into the game a few minutes before half time when the in form Santa-Cruz slotted home from 6 yards.

Half-Time

Another famous Blackburn.

It was so easy in the first half an hour of the match but Blackburn were like a different team in the second half. They started very quickly and didn’t allow Arsenal anytime on the ball. The equaliser came on the hour mark. Ex-arsenal player, and arguably Blackburn’s best player, David Bentley whipped in a ball from the left touchline and it was met by Santa-Cruz for his second of the match.

I feel that our chance to win the match has gone and with Blackburn on the ascendancy it is them that seem most likely to go on and win the game. Our best chance was to counter attack and there were chances for Bendtner and Eduardo.

As the full-time whistle, and extra-time approached, Denilson was sent off by Mike Riley for a two footed lunge on David Dunn. Can’t really argue with that either.

Extra-Time

More of the same in the first half of extra time. Blackburn taking control of the match with Arsenal playing on the counter. Only wasteful finishing prevented Santa-Cruz getting a hat trick buck luckily for Arsenal he fluffed his shot.

Just before the end of the first half of extra time Song went on a powerful run through the centre of the pitch before releasing the ball to Eduardo. The Croatian striker makes no mistake and his clinical finish restores Arsenals lead.

We hold on for the second half and win the match 3-2. We are in semi final and two legs away from our first visit to the new Wembley.
