Burnley vs Arsenal 6th January 2008 - FA Cup 4th Round - Turf Moor ![]() Burnley - It's a bit shit In the usual match day tradition I get up late and have to rush around like a mad man to get ready. I finally get into the car ready to make the 240 mile tip to Lancashire. I don’t get off to a great start when I snap my sat nav holder off the grill in my car. Great. I balance it on the dash instead and before I leave my drive it's on the floor and I nearly crash into a wall as I retrieve it. When I get on the m40 I fiddle some more with my tom tom but again it ends up on the floor and me nearly in an accident. I’m determined though and continue to try and balance it. This time it lasts about 10 miles but ultimately ends up in the seat and as I nearly end up off the motorway and in the verge I decided to buy a new holder in the next service station. I stop after about 100 miles. There’s a mobile phone shop which boast on the windows of being open 7 days a week but its shut. I make it to Burnley after only 3 hours (don’t ask) and then it takes me 40 mins to find a car parking space which eventually I find of top of a massive hill. It’s a tiny stadium and a tiny pitch which is covered in bobbles and mud patches. This is not going to help our fluent passing game. The seats are made of wood but I imagine we will stand throughout the match anyway, as we do at most away matches. The line up for todays match is: Jens Lehmann Armand Traore (Justin Hoyte 71) Philippe Senderos Emmanuel Eboue Kolo Toure Bacary Sagna Abou Diaby Denilson Gilberto Nicklas Bendtner Eduardo I am pleased to see Eduardo and Bendtner up front as I prefer the 4-4-2 formation. ![]() Burnley Bus Station - A good way to leave Burnley It's not a great start when we nearly concede from a Burnley header which luckily hits the wood work. We try to play football but it’s difficult on that pitch. Burnley are determined as well and they are playing a good game. We take the lead from what looked from behind the opposite goal like it was bundled over the line but I later see a replay which showed that it was in fact an excellent finish from our new fox in the box (god, he's in a different class to Francis Jeffers). ![]() Running - A good way to leave Burnley Turf moor is a nice stadium but it's sad to see so many empty seats especially when tickets were only 19 each. It's quiet too. The Arsenal fans sing throughout and try to get some banter going with the away fans. Chants of "stand up if you have a job", "we pay your benefits" and "you're just a small town in Blackburn" doesn't make a difference though. ![]() Driving - A good way to leave Burnley That’s as exciting as it got in the match. The second half was the same as the first. Arsenal not playing well but doing enough despite the best efforts of Eboue who gave the ball away at every opportunity. I'll be glad when the African cup starts and he fucks off for a month. Burnley have a few chances and for a while I felt that they would score an equaliser and it would go to a reply. Couldn't have grumbled too much either but they had a player sent off for a tackle with his studs showing and thankfully we get the second goal about 10 mins before the end when Bendtner slots the ball into an empty net after taking it around the Burnley goalie. It ends 2-0 and we are in the draw for the 4th round which is more important than the performance. ![]() Train - A good way to leave Burnley It took me 10 mins to walk down to the stadium and about 30 mins to walk back up the hill to my car. I thought I was going to have a heart attack (note to self: must lose weight and get fit). I made it alive and had about an hour and half to get over it as I was stuck in local traffic and moved about 2 miles in this time. Once I was on the motorway it was clear and I got home at 8.30pm, 11 hours after setting off but it was worth every minute to watch the Arsenal. |
