Everton vs Arsenal 29th December 2007 – Premier League – Goodison Park ![]() I’m pleasantly surprised when I see the line up today. Manuel Almunia Kolo Toure Gael Clichy William Gallas Bacary Sagna Abou Diaby Cesc Fabregas (Tomas Rosicky 88) Mathieu Flamini Alexander Hleb (Lassana Diarra 82) Nicklas Bendtner Eduardo (Emmanuel Adebayor 74) It’s good to be playing 4-4-2 again after so long of playing 4-5-1. I get so frustrated with Adebayor so I’m glad to see him on the bench with the excellent Bendtner and Eduardo leading the attack. I’m convinced that Eduardo is quality and he is such a natural finisher I’m sure he will be the “fox in the box” we have been trying to find for so long. Man Ure were beaten earlier today by West Ham, our next opponents, so if we win today we will go top again. This is a massive bonus because I really couldn’t see Man Ure losing again this season. It will be difficult though as Everton are in good form with only 1 defeat (against Man Ure) in their last 15 games. The match kicks off and after 3 minutes we have our first chance. Eduardo gets the ball inside the box but seems to lose it at his feet and it ends up being cleared. It takes both teams a while to settle but after a simple catch for Almunia on 10 minutes he seems to land awkwardly and requires treatment. Lehman warms up, if you can call it that, but Almunia appears to be OK and is able to continue. It’s a scrappy game so far and there have been loads of free kicks which are just breaking up the game. The first corner of the game come after 13 minutes and it’s for Everton. Arteta takes it and after getting a touch from someone it goes towards the near post. It looks like Bendtner will clear the ball but it seems to bounce off his knee towards Cahill and he bundles it over the line. It’s 1 nil to Everton. Nightmare. Arsenal get more frustrated as Everton make the most of the scrappiness and they have a good spell for 10 minutes or so. We have our first corner after 34 minutes and it ends up with an Eduardo shot which is well wide of the goal. It’s clear to see Everton’s confidence on 38 minutes when Phil Neville takes a shot from outside of the area! It goes over the bar, tosser. Heavy rain hammers down and this will suit Everton’s scrappy play more than it will Arsenal’s passing style and were struggling before the rain started! Yakubu is through on goal but Kolo catches him and puts him under pressure. For some reason Yakubu decides to crumple for a penalty but it’s correctly not given by the Ref. What a wanker – It could have been 2 nil. Half-Time ![]() Everton Fans We don’t make any changes at during the break and it’s a good job because we equalise 90 seconds after the restart. A long ball from the Arsenal half reaches Eduardo inside the Everton area. He controls the ball with his first touch and the slots it past the keeper with his second. Eddy was surrounded by 3 Everton defenders too so it was an excellent goal, very well taken. It nearly got even better just a minute later when Hleb found his way into the box but his shot was poor and went wide for a goal kick. Gallas gifts Everton a corner after his uncontrolled header on 49 minutes but thankfully nothing comes from it and Hleb finally clears the ball from the box after about 15 touches. On 56 minutes Everton nearly take the lead when Yakubu has a free header but he manages to miss the target completely and it goes wide. We take the lead after 58 minutes. It’s another Eduardo goal and it’s similar to his first. He controls the ball in the box, he kicks the ball one way, runs around the defender the other way, collects the ball and passes it into the net. Class. It’s now Everton’s turn to get frustrated! On 65 minutes Eduardo looked to be through on goal once more but he controlled the ball with his hand and got a yellow card instead of his hat-trick. The game threatens to boil over and Clichy is booked when he takes out Arteta with a tackle from behind on 68 minutes. There’s activity on the bench and it looks like Adebayor is going to come on for Bendtner. Adebayor is standing on the side lines and he is just waiting for the ball to go out of play so that the substitution can be made. It may not happen though when Bendtner makes a very bad challenge on Andrew Johnson. It’s an over the top challenge, one of those leg breakers. The ref shows Bendtner a yellow card, his second of the game and then the red. Off he goes. Wenger looks pissed off and doesn’t even look at Bendtner as he walks past. Eduardo must be pissed off too as he is now the player taken off for Adebayor. Everton can smell blood now and they go in for the kill. Attack after attack they turn on the pressure as they hunt for the equaliser. Completely against the run of play, we score again. A long clearance from Almunia bounces over midfield toward Adebayor. He doesn’t win the ball but keeps running. There is confusion between the goalkeeper and an Everton defender and Adebayor is able to steal the ball away from them and then run it into an empty net. 3-1 with 10 minutes left, surely we will get all 3 points now. Hleb is replaced by Diarra in the 82nd minute. A couple of minutes later sees another sending off. This time is Arteta who gets a straight red card for lashing out at Cesc and catching him with a forearm right in front of the referee. The game boils over and there are bookings for Cesc and Flammers. Cesc seems ready to explode and he is wisely substituted. Rosicky replaces him. There is 4 minutes added on and we make the most of it when we get the 4th goal. Diaby does good work and he dances around the ball inside the Everton area before passing to Rosicky who releases a superb shot into the bottom left hand corner. The whistle blows and the players and fans celebrate like we won the league. A great result which puts us top of the pile again. Hopefully this time we won’t give it up so easily. ![]() |
