Liverpool vs Arsenal 8th April 2008 – Champions League QF Leg 2 – Anfield I have a nervous sense of anticipation as I drive up the M6 towards Liverpool. We must score tonight but it’s rare that we don’t score. Also, we know what we need to do. Liverpool on the other hand may decide to defend, as 0-0 is sufficient for them. Really we should have been in front going into this match with the blatant penalty that wasn’t given. Hopefully that won’t haunt us tonight. I arrive at Anfield about 45 minutes before kick off and it seems like an eternity before the match actually starts. Our line up is: Manuel Almunia Kolo Toure Philippe Senderos Gael Clichy William Gallas Cesc Fabregas Mathieu Flamini (Gilberto 42) Emmanuel Eboue (Theo Walcott 72) Abou Diaby (Robin Van Persie 72) Alexander Hleb Emmanuel Adebayor A quick summary of the match is: First Half We start at an electric pace and control the game. The first 20 minutes is some of the best football that we have played this season and Liverpool can’t get a sniff of the ball. We get a deserved goal in the 13th minute when Diaby slots the ball home from about 6 yards. Some terrible defending allows Liverpool to get an equaliser on the half hour mark when Hypia has a free header at the edge of the box. Senderos where were you? This was against the run of play but gives Liverpool the confidence to start playing themselves as they finish the half stronger. Second Half It’s an even start to the half but the breakthrough comes for Liverpool in the 69th minute when Torres is given to much space in the box and with his back to goal he is able to turn and get the shot in. It’s 2-1 to Liverpool but it doesn’t really change things from an Arsenal perspective, as we still need to score. We do. In the 83rd minute Theo makes an amazing run from our penalty area beating 5 Liverpool players before crossing the ball into the Liverpool area for an easy tap in for Adebayor. 2-2 and the result is now in a favour because of the Away goals rule. We only need to hold on for 6 minutes and we are through. We are going mental and Anfield goes quiet, but not for long. We are still celebrating when Liverpool are awarded a penalty less that a minute after we scored. It was a soft penalty and replays show that Babel was going down before he got into the area. He cheated Kolo Toure and won. I felt physically sick. Gerard scored the pen and as we chased the 3rd goal we left massive gaps at the back and then Babel, the cheat, was able to run away to score Liverpool’s forth goal. |
