Newcastle vs Arsenal 5th December 2007 – Premier League – St James’ Park This is our game in hand and we need the win to extend our lead to 6 points. It won’t be easy though. Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce is under pressure too and there is talk of him getting the sack if the lose this match. I would love it if this happened! It would be sweet revenge for all of those frustrating games against Bolton when he was their manager. This is my first visit to St James’ Park, and to Newcastle. After much deliberation I decided to travel there on the train. The journey was surprisingly pleasant and I arrive in Newcastle at 3pm. After checking into the hotel I go for a wander around town followed by a nice meal over looking the Tyne. I can see St James' Park from my hotel room ![]() A taxi takes me to the ground, I probably could have walked, but it’s a good job I didn’t because I needed all of my energy to hike up the stairs to the Away section. There’s flight after flight and I’m knackered when I finally get to the top. It was worth it though as I’m greeted by the bar! There’s time for a couple of pints of Worthington’s. Again, like Villa on Saturday, the service at the food outlet and bar was excellent. It shows how good that these services can be and it highlights how badly we do it at the Emirates. ![]() They stick the away fans in the top corner of the ground and the first thing that strikes me is that there’s no real segregation between the fans. This is how it should be really, and it shows how good the Newcastle fans area and that they are real football fans. No time for warm feelings though. I hope we beat them 6 nil and their manager gets the sack! ![]() It looks like this may happen too because after only 4 minutes we take the lead. It’s a fantastic goal by Adebayor. Eboue crosses in the ball from the left, Adebayor leaps to win the ball, controls it with his chest and then volleys into the net from about 12 yards out. A very, very good goal. It’s party time in Newcastle and the Arsenal fans start singing “He’s big, He’s fat, He’s gonna get the sack, Allardyce, Allardyce!” I get comfortable in my seat and wait for the next goals to fly in. They don’t come. In fact all we get is frustration from bad referring, bad tackles and stop-start action. The goal turned Newcastle into Bolton. During half time I have no problem getting a pint which again annoys me. The toilets are shared between the home and away supporters and there is no trouble or intimidation. In fact the atmosphere is quite good between the two sets of supporters. The Geordie fans have been quite though with no real singing or banter. They have something to cheer about on the hour mark when they get their equaliser. It comes after Eduardo gives the ball away to Alan Smith whose cross is met by Steven Taylor and his shot is deflected into the goal by the post. Shit. It’s a nervous and scrappy last half an hour with Newcastle looking the most likely to score. Thankfully it doesn’t come and we get a point that makes us 4 points clear of Man Ure at the top of the table. The home fans leave the happiest and the manager is job is saved, for now at least. I walk back to the hotel after the match and amazingly find it without too much bother, although in my absence £60 was added to the room service bill. Next time I’ll take my wife to the match as well. |
