Reading vs Arsenal 12th November 2007 – Premier League – Madejski Stadium ![]() Tonight’s match is live on Setanta and I’m watching from home as I was unable to get a ticket for the match. The team is: Manuel Almunia Emmanuel Eboue Kolo Toure Gael Clichy William Gallas Bacary Sagna Cesc Fabregas Mathieu Flamini Alexander Hleb (Lassana Diarra 79) Tomas Rosicky (Theo Walcott 83) Emmanuel Adebayor (Nicklas Bendtner 83) Adebayor is playing up front on his own with a five man midfield, although this can quickly become a 4-3-3 formation. This seems to be how we play away from home this season. There’s a minutes silence for Remembrance Day which, as expected, is perfectly observed by both sets of fans. The match is sold out too and the atmosphere seems good. ![]() The match starts and Reading start ferociously, charging forward at every opportunity. It is Arsenal who have the first chance though. It’s after 3 minutes when Adebayor gets onto a beautiful through ball from Cesc and is one on one with the keeper. His shot goes past the goalie but hits the post and goes out of play for a goal kick. It should be 1 nil now, but it’s not. It’s a good start to the game with chances at both ends. After about 15 minutes we start to dominate possession and control the tempo of the game. Cesc has a shot after some good slick passing around the Reading area but it’s straight at the keeper. After 25 minutes played it’s all Arsenal, but with no real chances or shots. Adebayor is such a frustrating player. Sometime his control is very poor and he like a moaning lazy bastard, other time he looks like the best player in the world! It’s not very often though. It’s a bit like a practise match. Reading are camped in their own half as Arsenal pass it around too easily. The temp has gone and there’s no real urgency from either side. The best shot of the match so far actually comes from Reading. Gunnerson fires a sweetly hit volley on target fro range but it’s saved by Almunia. 32 minutes and Reading are camped in their penalty area with all 10 of their outfield players back behind the ball. We win a free kick on the edge of the area on 37 mins after Cesc Fabregas was fouled. Kolo steps up to take it but blasts it well wide. ![]() The breakthrough comes just before half time. There is some good build up play and Hleb who whips the ball across the face of the goal where it is met by Flamini. His shot is deflected by a Reading defender but still goes into the net. It’s a well deserved 1 nil lead at half time. Half Time The match starts off in a similar way to the how the first half ended with Arsenal attacking and Reading defending for dear life. Our first corner of the match comes on 49 minutes after a Flamini shot is pushed out by the keeper but we don’t do anything with it. A couple of minutes later Adebayor shoots over the bar. Adebayor is involved in the build up to his goal in the 51st minute. He makes a good run with the ball and then passes to Tomas but his angle is to tight to shoot so he passes back to Adebayor. Ade plays a one two with Cesc and then passes the ball into the net with no power but lots of class. Cruising now and the game should have been ended two minutes later with an excellent goal by Adebayor was disallowed for offside. The TV replays showed that it was the wrong decision. Adebayor is running riot now and has another shot over the bar on 55 minutes. He is offside again shortly afterward for about the tenth time in the match. An amazing stat is that for the last 5 minutes we have had 82% possession. I have never seen it that high before and it clearly shows our dominance in this match. If it was a boxing match the ref would have stopped it by now. We are dominant, but still wasteful in front of goal as there are chances for Toure, Fabregas, Rosicky ant Adebayor. ![]() It’s too easy for Arsenal and the inevitable 3rd goal is scored by Hleb who goes into the box, around the keeper and scores, all at walking pace! The performance today was perfect until Fabregas got his 5th booking of the season for dissent after saying something to the ref. It was a stupid booking and now means that he misses the Wigan game. Reading score a disappointing consolation goal in the 92nd minute which means that we win the match 3-1. This result is still flattering to Reading as they were out classed from start to finish. Our good run continues and the 2 goal gap is enough for us to go back to the top of the table. |
