Sheffield United vs Arsenal 31st October 2007 - Carling Cup 4th Rd - Brammell Lane ![]() I like the Carling Cup. It’s a good chance to see the Arsenal reserve team and to see which players might make it into the first team. I went to Sheffield Utd last year in the Premier League. We lost that match 1-0, but they had a different Manager then (Neil Warnock – Anagram: Colin Wanker!). Their current manager is the over-rated Bryan Robson and I think this gives Arsenal a better chance of winning. The team line up is: Lukasz Fabianski Justin Hoyte Abou Diaby (Fran Merida 87) Alexandre Song Gilberto Kieran Gibbs Denilson Lassana Diarra Theo Walcott (Henri Lansbury 83) Nicklas Bendtner Eduardo (Nacer Barazite 86) ![]() The main surprise is that the Captain was the Goalie, Fabianski, and not Gilberto. Not sure what message Arsene is trying to send here. Is it to Gilberto or Jens Lehman? The match starts and Sheffield Utd’s game plan is plain to see. Over physical with lots of aerial pressure. United have a couple of chances in the first few minutes and Fabianski pulls of an exceptional save. Arsenal’s first attack of the game wins a corner after 4 minutes, but it’s easily cleared. After 7 minutes, a slick Bendtner pass from half way goes over the top to Eduardo. The Croatian striker controls the ball well and unleashes a rocket into the top of the goal from outside of the area. It’s unstoppable and it’s 1 nil to the Arsenal. The only full stand in the Stadium is the Away stand, Arsenal sold their full allocation of tickets, and it’s now jumping with joy. Bendtner and Theo are playing well together and they link up on a few occasions. It’s good pressure from Arsenal and some very good passing and movement. After 19 minutes Theo wins a free kick just outside the box (the opposite side to where Steven Gerard scored against us on Sunday), Eduardo take the kick but it’s soft and goes straight into the wall and is cleared. ![]() On about the 30 min mark my phone rings and I miss the remainder of the half! – Bugger. Luckily there are no goals though! Half Time It’s a bit stop start for the first few minutes but then on 49 minutes a clever Gilberto pass from inside the Arsenal half, cuts through the sleepy United defence where Eduardo picks up the ball and then squeezes the ball past the keeper into the back of the net for 2 nil. Arsenal are comfortable now. Denilson and Gilberto are playing very well in the centre of midfield, they look very steady. On 65 minutes Theo makes a good run into the box and is able to dribble around the keeper but his shot hits the post, Theo is the unluckiest player ever! Some more good play around the United area and when the ball goes to Denilson outside of the area the Arsenal fans shout “Shoooooot”, Denilson must hear this as he unleashes a power drive that the goalie can do nothing about. 3 nil to the Arsenal. In a rare Sheffield United attack, the ball is struck past the Captain, Fabianski, and is cleared off the line by the real Captain on the pitch, Gilberto. ![]() It look likes Eduardo will get his hat-trick on 77 mins when he is clear through on goal, but the shot is deflected wide for a corner instead. With ten minutes to go, and with our name in the Quarter Final draw, it was time for debuts for Henri Lansbury, Fran Meridia & Nacer Barazite. It was an easy victory over a poor Sheffield United side. At the end of the match it was good to see Bryan Robson and Brian Kidd (yes I know he was Arsenal) looking so deflated, hopefully it will be the same for their ex-colleagues on Saturday too. ![]() |
