Wigan vs Arsenal
9th March 2008 – Premier League – JJB Stadium

I was determined to have a famous Wigan pie today as I missed out last time I was here.

Hopefully this will be followed by 3 easy points against a relegation battling Wigan side, but my travels to Birmingham the other week remind me that nothing is easy in the Premier League.

We arrive in good time and settle into our seats and tuck into our pies. The pitch is a bog and there are a lot of empty seats. Welcome to Wigan.

The line up today is:

Manuel Almunia
Philippe Senderos
Gael Clichy
William Gallas
Bacary Sagna
Cesc Fabregas
Mathieu Flamini
Gilberto (Kolo Toure 66)
Alexander Hleb
Emmanuel Adebayor
Nicklas Bendtner (Robin Van Persie 66)

We kick off the match and nearly score straight away. An excellent pass from Cesc put Adebayor through on goal and the striker beat the defence but the Wigan goalie Chris Kirkland produced a good blocking save.

We tried to play our usual passing game but it wasn’t possible on this pitch and we didn’t seem to have a plan B.

This said we still should win the match. There were chances for Flamini, Cesc, Bendtner and Adebayor in a frustrating first half against a team that don’t want to lose (rather than want to win).

It’s disappointing when the Wigan fans start singing songs about Eduardo’s injury and singing that he will never play again. I hope they get relegated.

Half-Time

We had 3 chances in the opening 5 minutes of this half but Adebayor, Fabregas and Hleb all failed to convert.

A few moments later Wigan had their first chance of the match when a Marlon King chance causes some comedic defending from Gallas and Almunia which thankfully goes unpunished.

The half continues with us being the better side but having no luck (or being wasteful?) in front of goal.

In the 66th minute we have the return of Robin van Persie. The Dutchman looks fit but shows he’s not match fit when his first few shots, and a free kick, are well off target.

The last couple of minutes were intense as Fabregas failed to convert from a one on one and then at the other end Kumas had a shot blocked for Wigan.

The match ends 0-0 and the Wigan bench jumps for joy. If the draw against Aston Villa last week felt like a victory, then todays draw certainly feels like a defeat.
